Announcing the 2017 Speaker Series

Announcing the 2017 Speaker Series

One of the primary goals for 2017 was to expand our public programming options for adult learners in Pottawattamie County.  While youth and family programming remains a major part of our curriculum we realized that our offerings for adult learners needed some expansion and thus the 2017 Speaker Series was born.
The idea really kicked off in 2016 when we hosted two amazing speakers, in May we hosted Mark Hirsch, photographer & author behind the bestselling book “That Tree”, and in November Dan Kaercher, author, TV personality, & former editor of Midwest Living helped us discover Iowa’s Natural Heritage. These events paired dynamic speakers with local foods and were very well received by the public.  We decided to expand on our two pilot events and create an entire series that would focus on various topics appealing to a wide range of adult learners.  The 2017 Speaker Series is designed for teens & adults to provide them with an opportunity to learn from and interact with various authorities in the fields of conservation & environmental science.
One of our major goals was to keep this programming series free to the public allowing a larger audience access to these experts.  Our initial funding came from the ever generous Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation, their support enabled us to move forward with the programming and start securing speakers.  Further support was found in the form of a grant of nearly $2,000 from Humanities Iowa, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. This grant and the support of the Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation allowed us to expand our series to 7 monthly programs complete with speaker, book signing, & refreshments all for no cost to the participants.  All you need to attend these programs is your paid $2.00 per vehicle daily entrance pass or a valid Pottawattamie County Parks permit.
Our education department has put together an impressive list of speakers with decades of experience to share with the public.  Space is limited so preregistration is recommended to secure your spot at each of these amazing presentations.
