2018 Brings New Membership Opportunities!

2018 Brings New Membership Opportunities!

By Kate Simmons, Community Relations Coordinator
KinderNature Fish Fun small (1)For the first time in 27 years Pottawattamie County Conservation is raising our park entry fees and adding a little something different for the 2018 season. While daily entrance passes will increase to $3.00 per vehicle at all of our public areas the biggest change the new year will bring is the introduction of a brand new membership program.
Previously guests wishing to avoid paying the daily fee during each visit to the park were given the option of purchasing an annual permit for 12 months of access to all Pottawattamie Count parks. While the annual permit option was very popular it didn’t allow for growth of the parks through user fees and it was not tax deductible for our users. Annual permits also failed to support the Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation which sponsors many of the programs, park improvements, & land aquisitions that are integral to our growth and survival.
To better support this mission and improve park usage for our guests we have decided to replace the old system with a new membership program. Beginning in 2018 guests wishing to avoid purchasing a daily pass at every visit will be asked to purchase a membership to the Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation instead. These memberships include our annual permit, are tax deductible, & come with other added benefits.  More importantly your membership will support the survival of the parks and help other important projects such as our free and low cost public programming, field trip & in school program scholarships, and other park improvements.
Three membership levels have been created for our visitors & each come with our 12-month admission permit along with additional benefits. Guests are able to purchase the membership level of their choice from staff at any of our parks, at the front gate using the payment envelope, by mail, and … ONLINE! Yes! Beginning in 2018 you will be able to purchase any membership level you choose online and have your membership materials mailed to you.

While we recognize the added cost is a deterrent for some folks this is an important step to continue our growth and after 27 years it is a necessary step.  With our previous costs a guest needed to visit the park 5 times within a 12 month period to make back their investment, with the new cost the number of visits needed annually is now 7 but don’t forget the new benefits. Our Annual Membership features a certificate for a canoe or boat rental that alone is worth $20. A Family membership now includes 2 permits & a cabin rental, a $65 value! But, more importantly, your membership will go a long way towards continuing the success and viability of your county parks for a long time to come.
