School Programs - Including Field Trips and Outreach programs in the classroom

In-School presentations offered in Pottawattamie County public elementary schools based on Iowa Core Science Curriculum involving relevant nature topics.

Pottawattamie County Conservation provides environmental education programs in schools as part of developing environmental learning both out of and indoors. Students in grades PreK-6th attending public schools within Pottawattamie County receive one free in-school program each year, and educators may purchase additional programs for their classes. Topics are relevant to Iowa Core Curriculum and are tailored to include age appropriate activities and participation.

These programs engage students with nature topics ranging from life cycles and food chains to frogs and animals of Iowa. For each grade there is a menu of in-school program choices best suited for that age and curricula level.

Examples of programs per grade include:

  • Animals in Winter (Preschool)
  • Nocturnal Animals (Kindergarten)
  • Plant Parts (1st grade)
  • Animals of Iowa (2nd grade)
  • Predator and Prey (3rd grade)
  • Geology Rocks (4th grade)
  • Verts and Inverts (5th grade)
  • Biomes (6th grade)

Our focus is on Pottawattamie County schools. We reach these schools through in-school presentations and field trips to our parks. We are happy to reach non-Pottawattamie County schools through field trips to our parks.
