Thank You Volunteers!

Thank You Volunteers!

By Kate Simmons, Community Relations Coordinator
April is National Volunteer Month with the week of April 19th – 25th designated as National Volunteer Appreciation Week so we want to take a moment to show some love to a great group of people. Volunteers make the world go around & we couldn’t do what we do without the support of our amazing team of volunteers.
Pottawattamie Conservation Volunteers really do it all! Each year volunteers head to the parks to assist staff with projects ranging from park maintenance, to educational programming, to guest services. Each one of these dedicated volunteers works to make sure your visit to your county parks is a great one & the hours they contribute annually are invaluable to Pottawattamie Conservation.
We want to thank everyone who logged volunteer hours with the county in 2019. These volunteers do it all, they help in a myriad of ways & fill positions like campground host, welcome desk, public programming, HawkWatcher, & board member. Together they logged over 4,000 hours of volunteer time with Pottawattamie Conservation & the Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation during the 2019 calendar year.

We also want to make special mention of two very important groups of volunteers & supporters that help keep Hitchcock Nature Center in Honey Creek a top notch place to visit.
The first is the Greater Omaha Area Trail Runnerz (GOATz). This amazing group of individuals spends a lot of time running the trails at Hitchcock Nature Center & they have become huge part of our volunteer family. From organizing trail maintenance events, to daily trash pick up, to assisting visitors while they are out & about they are terrific ambassadors for the park & a huge asset to the staff at Hitchcock Nature Center.
The second is the Loess Hills Nordic Ski Patrol (LHNSP). This volunteer, non-profit service organization is part of the National Ski Patrol System whose purpose is to keep people who are participating in outdoor recreational activities safe. The LHNSP is a team of qualified and trained patrol staff who help provide outdoor safety education, emergency medical care and evacuation of injured visitors, volunteers, employees of the Hitchcock Nature Center. This team of volunteers can be spotted patrolling the trails & campgrounds at Hitchcock Nature Center & providing support during major events to help our staff keep things running safely & smoothly.
We also want to thank each & every one of you who may have volunteered through a service project, private event, or simply by picking up trash along the trail during your last hike. You make a difference & you are appreciated.
Official Pottawattamie Conservation volunteers are always needed & great benefits come with that title. Volunteers get a free annual permit, volunteer only events, early registration, appreciation gifts, & an office with a view!
